Vermicomposting harnesses a high concentration of earthworms to accelerate the decomposition and stabilization of biodegradable matter.   The end product is a premium organic soil supplement called vermicompost.  Other common names are: worm castings, vermicast, worm compost, worm humus and worm manure.

The earthworm species (or composting worms) most often used are Branding Worms (Eisenia foetida) or Red Worms (Lumbricus rubellus).   These species are only rarely found in soil and are adapted to the special conditions in rotting vegetation, compost and manure piles.   Composting worms are available from mail-order suppliers and angling shops where they are sold as bait.

Worm Castings are considered to be gourmet class of compost and loved by gardeners. Mixing 20% vermicompost with 80% of thermophilic compost creates an excellent top soil amendment.
